WCB-Alberta is not a government department – it has
a president and CEO who reports to a board of directors.
The organization operates under the provincial Workers’
Compensation Act, enacted in 1918.
WCB-Alberta is fully funded by employers.
There are no tax dollars involved in the workers’ compensation
system and there are no deductions from workers’ pay.
WCB
manages hundreds of thousands of claims every year. Of all
the lost-time claims submitted, just under ten per cent fail
to qualify for coverage.
Workers’ compensation is a no-fault
insurance system: insured workers are eligible to receive
benefits for work-related injuries, no matter who is at fault.
Not
all employers in Alberta are covered by WCB insurance. Workers’
Compensation Regulation defines industries not required to
purchase this insurance.
Our goal is to help workers
get back to work.
WCB-Alberta has the lowest premiums and
pays among the highest wage replacement benefits in Canada.
WCB claims are never permanently closed; new information is grounds
for us to re-open a file and reconsider a decision.
We have
purchased health care services directly since WCB-Alberta
was established in 1918.
WCB has had its own rehabilitation facility
since 1952. Millard Health has developed sought-after multi-disciplinary
services and treatment care models for occupational injuries.
