Diagnostic testing

WCB-Alberta can help health care providers expedite key diagnostic testing, assessments or services.

• computerized tomography (CT) scans
• magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
• bone scans

Consultations and surgeries

Visiting specialist clinics (VSCs)

A VSC is a facility WCB-Alberta has partnered with to ensure timely access to certain surgical consultations and procedures. Referrals are intended for surgical cases only and can be made at any time during a claim. All referrals must be requested in writing by a physician and must be initiated by the case manager.

Non-surgical consultations (NSCs)

A NSC is a tool used to confirm a diagnosis and make treatment recommendations. All referrals must be requested in writing by a physician and must be initiated by the case manager.

*Note: Currently non-surgical consultations are limited to orthopaedic and plastic specialists. All other types of specialist consultations are arranged directly by the treating practitioner.
